According to Kansascity.com, St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., has received a 'Whole Lotta Love' in the form of $2.4 million from British rock band LED ZEPPELIN’s first concert in 19 years.
The donation will establish scholarships for three St. John’s students from Turkey or of Turkish descent, funded by the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, named for the founder of Atlantic Records who signed Led Zeppelin, the college said. Ertegun’s widow, Mica Ertegun, also contributed an unspecified amount.
Led Zeppelin’s Dec. 10 concert at London’s O2 Arena was the first performance by singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones, the three surviving members of the group, since 1988. They were joined by drummer Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham, who died in 1980. The concert was attended by 20,000 fans selected from a lottery of more than 1 million entrants.
Ertegun, who was born in Istanbul and died in 2006, was a 1944 graduate of St. John’s and served on the school’s board of visitors.
