GRIDLINK

This third album from grindcore kings Gridlink is significant not because at 21 minutes it's pretty much twice as long as either of their first two full-lengths; it's significant because it's their last. And it's very significant because it's the last grindcore album vocalist Jon Chang (ex-DISCORDANCE AXIS) will lay down his familiar screaming on. It's a drag, but I'm not one to spend too long mourning: let's celebrate what the man gave us, not wallow in the loss. And here he gives us a lot, screaming his heart out over top of grindcore that is both stubborn in its adherence to the rules and forward-thinking. But for all its progressions (check out the tastefully placed violin), this one works because it's all about the speed, the grind, the power, and the glory. Toss in a rare vocal cameo from ex-Assück vocalist Paul Pavlovich and, man, it just doesn't get too much better than this. Chang has left grindcore, but he's left behind an enormous legacy that will give us much to chew on for years to come. If anyone deserves to leave without a fight, it's him.
