BLACKFINGER

Blackfinger

(Dark Star/The Church Within)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt

TROUBLE's last one was a big disappointment for those wanting the band's classic sound, mainly because of the lack of one Eric Wagner on vocals. And, to the band's credit, what can ya do? If it ain't happening, it ain't happening, but here Wagner makes it happen with BLACKFINGER, who basically take the Trouble sound that the band had during their classic Def American records era and... well, leave it more or less intact. And damned if I haven't been waiting for just that for a long time. Here the tunes drip with the smooth honey of despair that Wagner's voice always just oozes, while the music goes from upbeat stoner rock to more plodding doom with might and majesty. Nothing here makes me cringe (even the late-era-Floyd-ballad tunes rule); by way of comparison, I spend every minute listening to that last Trouble record with my eyes narrowed, adrenaline pumping, spray painting "this is not what it could be" over my kitchen walls. The only coulda-been here is the production, which is a bit too thin and not as bass heavy and pounding as one would hope, given the pure metal majesty of the tunes they house. It's a small complaint for an album that gives me shivers and goosebumps, and reminds me just how powerful, earth-shattering, and mind-melting metal can be when done with this much authority.
