HARDWARES

I EXIST

From Darkness

(Prosthetic)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.0

Australia sludge/doom rockers I EXIST are on their third full-length, and with the support of Prosthetic behind them, hopefully more fans of the low and slow will get exposed to the band. Right away, the production impresses, bass-heavy, grimy, and raw, but also packing a punch; it contains the faster, almost unhinged punk moments, of which there are plenty, with a capable firm hand. 'Sorrow On Hill 105' has a great title and even more great DOWN-inspired southern sludge riffing; it almost makes you feel good, when it's not making you feel bad. 'Ride To Hell' has a (perhaps unintentional) nod to Slayer in the drum intro, and the huge title track is like BUZZOV*EN covering KISS. The barked vocals can get a bit exhausting after a while, as can the overall no-hope vibe, but that comes with the territory. The main thing to stress here is those killer riffs; man, they're just all over the place on this album, summoning up those happy-to-be-upset sludge-metal-SKYNYRD moments that EYEHATEGOD do so well. I EXIST have been threatening to be great for a while, and with this album, they're there.
