FUNERAL CIRCLE

Funeral Circle

(Shadow Kingdom)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 7.0

Vancouver doomsters FUNERAL CIRCLE play doom in the old-school sense here on their debut: nothing sludgey or oppressively heavy, instead the crew are unabashed in their love of traditional doom bands like those fronted by Messiahs or Wagners. It's not until track three, 'Corpus Of Dark Sorcery', when things really get going, the nine-minute tune a great slow doomster filled with big riffs, the band shining loud and proud. There are moments when things threaten to get cheesy, like the spoken word on 'Tempus Edax Rerum', and the vocals could use a bit more power, but you can always just focus on the cool drab atmosphere and all is forgiven quickly enough. They up the tempo a bit sometimes, like on 'Black Colossus', which brings the doom rock like Sabbath, and that works just as well as their slower material. Nice new addition to the Canadian metal landscape here.
