BLOODGOD

Pseudologia Phantastica

(Independent)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 6.0

This quickie three-song EP from Netherlands-based BLOODGOD starts off simple enough, some reliable death metal, bass high up in the thin but cool mix, the tunes just tech enough but also just simple enough. So you're thinking it's going to be straight-up death metal, and you're right, for a bit. But later in that same tune, you get some PANTERA riffing and soloing; they pull it off but it's a bit perplexing. So, you move into the second tune and the vibe goes from Sweden and death metal to the prairies of Canada and that kind of death-lite/groove thrash that countless bands stay warm playing through the cold Canuck winters; I do appreciate the "play slow and slower" part of this tune, but apart from that, even repeat listens aren't making it stick. I love when bands name a song after themselves, as these dudes do with closer, yup, 'Bloodgod', which brings the Dimebag riffing to a level far beyond anything most death bands would dare. But then when it suddenly bursts into a blast beat, it has as much tact as a three-year-old demanding a favourite toy. From happy to screaming bloody murder in one second. Let's hope for some focus on making those dynamics a bit smoother next time out; as for the Pantera-meets-death metal sound, that's probably here to stay, so if that's sounds like your idea of a good time, sign up. Otherwise, approach with a bit of caution.
