LEGION OF THE DAMNED

Ravenous Plague

(Napalm Records)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 8.0

Dutch band LEGION OF THE DAMNED’s sixth full-length disc, Ravenous Plague, is a raging slab of vicious death/thrash metal. There’s a lot of good things going for LOTD on Ravenous Plague, including the killer cover artwork created by world-famous illustrator Wes Benscoter (SLAYER, BROKEN HOPE, KREATOR). Intro track, ‘The Apocalyptic Surge,’ was created and composed by Jo Blankenburg, who has scored soundtracks for blockbuster films such as Harry Potter, X-Men and 300: Rise Of An Empire. And lastly, the band’s original producer, Andy Classen (ex-husband of HOLY MOSES’ vocalist Sabina Classen), who has produced every one of the band’s albums except 2011’s Descent Into Chaos, has returned to twirl the knobs once again. On its 11 tracks (excluding the symphonic intro), there are tons of great chugging thrash riffs, quality guitar solos, thunderous double bass triplets and well-placed guitar melodies. There are quite a few KREATOR moments present on Ravenous Plague. In fact, LOTD has an overall German ’80s thrash vibe going on, which also recalls SODOM and DESTRUCTION. Unfortunately, there are some “been there, done that” moments as far as originality of the riffs go. But the pace, tempo variation and riff transitions are top-notch, giving great dynamic and power to a tried and true musical formula in a convincing manner. The plague is raging.
