HARDWARES

MINISTERS OF ANGER

Renaissance

(Divebomb)

Oh, wow. This is a handful. Imagine Phil Rind from SACRED REICH singing over some WATCHTOWER jam tapes and you're getting there; add in that this band was the brainchild of a dude from DAMN THE MACHINE, whose name no one has uttered in many years, and you're getting closer, although maybe you're just getting more confused. Backing up Mr. Machine, also known as David Clemmons, is drummer Dave McClain (Sacred Reich, Machine Head), who puts in an admirable performance here, even if you get the feeling this is Clemmons' show, the thrash tunes so full of differing ideas, twists and turns, and sounds that it really could only have come from one mind... one very cluttered, busy mind. It's not really fun to listen to, but it does bring back memories of Combat Records coulda-been bands, whose ambition and pure determination sounded amazing, even if the tunes themselves crumbled under the weight of too much everything, a legacy of ambition the only thing remaining until a label like the awesome Divebomb comes along to resurrect this stuff, a notion which, as metal lifers, we fully appreciate, even if listening to 51 minutes of this (through varying recording qualities, demos, etc.) is asking quite a bit. The metal historian in me squeals in delight; the guy who wants to hear a good, memorable metal song groans.
