ADEM TEPEDELEN

The Brewtal Truth Guide To Extreme Beers

(Lyons Press)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 9.0

Inspired by his popular column, journalist Adem Tepedelen (who is a former BraveWords writer) has put together this well-presented and wildly informative book which brings the worlds of extreme craft beer and extreme metal together as one. Tepedelen personally tasted more than 100 of the most outrageous, absurd, and, well, extreme craft beers out there today and wrote about it, giving each one an extreme metal listening pairing and dropping lots of metal references along the way. For example, while talking about Ballast Point's Indra Kunindra stout, he mentions how NWOBHM band HOLOCAUST "inexplicably named their 1983 live album Hot Curry And Wine"; these out-of-left-field references really add a ton of personality to the book and keep metalheads reading. But this is primarily a beer book, with the metal stuff being fun and funny, but not the thrust of the writing here (although there are Q&As with a handful of notable extreme metal musicians). That's the booze itself, and the guy is a pro in this stuff (he writes about both metal and drink as a journalist), tossing around words like "complex" and "palate" as if that's what metalheads are barking at each other over the groove-thrash at the local dive bar. Tepedelen's immense knowledge of beer is fascinating, informative, and surely will make everyone reading this want to try some new and wild drinks (from insane, warning-on-the-label spicy hot to key lime pie beer; from the 666 brew to the Ozzy drink, it's all here). And when Tepedelen is dropping ultra-grim lines like "...the beer--cloudy yellow with orange blush, like ripe peach flesh--is a wonderland of exotic scents courtesy of the chamomile, peppercorns, wild flowers, coriander, and ginger," it's extreme stuff indeed.
