MALEVOLENCE

Antithetical

(Carbon Medien)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 7.5

Coming at ya from Portugal, MALEVOLENCE (not to be confused with a whole lotta other bands with that name) are on their third full-length, and it shows with the skill, maturity, and confidence all over the place here. Opener 'Slithering' has one of the best guitar solos I've heard in ages, all confusing and nonsensical, kinda like the way MESHUGGAH once made you feel. The whole tune, and the whole album, is just a wall of noise near impenetrable; some groove and electronic whatsits abound, but it ain't cheeseball, and the grinding blastbeats and ultra-unconventional structures and ideas swirl and confound, with the end result being extreme goth-tinged near-doom, or melodic death with bite and balls; whatever it is, it's got brains and a desire to reach outside the box. The huge, warm production helps keep things listenable, even when it threatens to become completely unlistenable, which is quite often: music this ambitious often comes with an exhausting price tag. You know, you say "melodic death metal" these days and you have to jump out of the way to avoid getting punched in the face; bands like this give melodic death metal a good name (because it's barely melodic, and barely death, I think).
