SUTURE

Carnivorous Urge To Kill

(Comatose Music)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt

Surely, it's very telling that this, a re-recording of Louisiana death metal band SUTURE's 2002 debut album, could just as easily have been written and recorded in 2012, 2002, or 1992. Songs like 'Those Without Eyes' (one of a couple tunes here not originally on the debut that are other old cuts re-recorded) stand out by having more than one cool, melodic guitar solo; it's worth noting that this is track 7, and the first thing that happens on the disc that really jumps out as being unique. They've got the NYDM pummel and pummel down pat, with tunes that grind and blast with a touch of groove, but when there's a new one from, say, BROKEN HOPE fighting for your buck, it's a tough struggle for bands like this. But there's almost enough here to say just buy both: the bass line on 'Systematic Removal Of Vitality' is awesome, and there's even a hidden bonus track of a classic death metal cover tune (I'll leave it as a surprise) that actually worked really damn well, proof that these guys have the spirit of the old school firmly entrenched in the knuckle-dragging riffs and bass-heavy guttural death metal that make up this album, made up the original, and will most likely make up all subsequent Suture releases.
