HARDWARES

CONVULSE

Evil Prevails

(Svart)

Finnish old-school deathsters CONVULSE certainly have an odd history: straight-laced '91 death debut, then a follow-up on Relapse, '94's cool Reflections. Then, a breakup and a return this year, although the return is more towards their old deathy material than their Reflections-era trippiness. But maybe it's all deceptive in the cover art, as this one does feature some weird moments (like in 'Unholy War', which starts off in simple and stupid fun fashion but ends up dropping into an inexplicable interlude mid-tune) but is more in general geared towards heavier sounds (but if it had a Reflections-ish non-conventional cover, would I be thinking it's weirder than it is? Man, I've got to revisit Reflections to test this theory out). But in general, this band could ditch the weirdness altogether and focus on primitive, barbaric, galloping 4/4 death, where they channel the sounds of AUTOPSY with a bit less slime, just grim and grindy, sloppy and raw, and, on tunes like 'Evil Prevails', slow and doomy, even with some great unnerving melody in there, too. And when 'Reborn In Chaos' gets going, the adrenaline is pumping, the fists are pounding, and death metal prevails, once again. And, great album cover, too.
