IMMORTAL BIRD

Akrasia

(Closed Casket)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.5

Led by prolific newcomer Rae Amitay (also of THRAWSUNBLAT, MARES OF THRACE and WOODS OF YPRES), Chicago's IMMORTAL BIRD has crafted a debut that is wise beyond its years, as the band's modern, blackened death-thrash is impressively written with the type of hindsight-as-foresight that's usually the product of collectives three or four records in. That said, Akrasia does unnecessarily engage in dirge n' doom passages, to the effort's detriment: Immortal Bird peaks, in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency, when the band's statement of purpose stays wholly set on its most aggressive and visceral end-points (see: 'Spitting Teeth', 'The Pseudoscientist'). This is a surprisingly strong debut, however, and there's no reason Immortal Bird can't build on the vast potential displayed here to create records that are, categorically, blazes in the northern sky.
