SPIRALARMS

Freedom

(Steamhammer/SPV)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 8.5

Fuzz rockers SPIRALARMS first ignited in 2004 when former high school buddies, guitarist Craig Locicero (FORBIDDEN, MANMADE GOD) and vocalist Tim Narducci (SYSTEMATIC), rekindled their friendship through music. On its 11 tracks off its sophomore release, Freedom, the band create sludgy, Southern-fried, space-grooves with signature vocal harmonies, mammoth ’70s rock riffs and slithering organ melodies. Rounding out the sextet is bassist/vocalist Chris Lombardo (VICIOUS RUMORS), keyboardist Brad Barth, guitarist Anthony Traslavina and drummer Ron Reeden (THE ESSENESS). SpiralArms is nothing like the Bay Area thrash Locicero is normally known for. It takes its ethos from a lot of broad and varied musical influences. Black Sabbath is a major influence on the band, which is displayed on the accurate cover version of ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’ from Vol. 4, complete with an authentic fuzzed-out guitar tone, cowbell and wah-wah guitar solo. Freedom is a back-to-the-roots rockin’ affair that will please the older crowd as well as intrigue the younger fans.
