CATUVOLCUS

Voyageurs De l'Aube

(Deathbound)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.0

Featuring ex-members of AUGURY, QUO VADIS, NEURAXIS and NEGATIVA, Quebec's CATUVOLCUS strays from the technical death paradigms of those bands and has, instead, embraced black-folk with the vigor of records usually associated with WODENSTHRONE, DRUDKH or ENSLAVED's most pagan passages. Voyageurs de l'Aube is an album that understands its inspiration, both historical and musical, and assuredly does it justice, this record the product of those who choose to embrace history and all its element to authentic end-points. Competently executed and well-written, Voyageurs De l'Aube is, manifestly, for those who bleed this style of black metal, as the album does its battle on the shores of the lakes, rivers and streams that have inspired a legion in each of the Arctic Council countries. That said, Voyageurs de l'Aube would benefit from slightly sharper song-writing, as the record is missing the one standout song that would elevate this album into the top tier. The stellar cover of WOODS OF YPRES' 'Thrill Of The Struggle', which also appeared on this year's excellent Heart Of Gold: A Tribute To Woods Of Ypres, acts as that moment but, alas, it's but a cover. Still, this is a band to watch in the Quebec and Canadian scenes - the next record could propel CATUVOLCUS into higher plateaus.
