THE UNDERGROUND REBELS

American Nightmare

(Independent)

Reviewed by : Aaron Small
Rating : 7.0

Vancouver rockers relocated to Vegas, THE UNDERGROUND REBELS feature in their ranks drummer Todd Waetzig who performs and tours with THE BLUE MAN GROUP. This self-produced eight-song EP sounds like a mix of CHEAP TRICK and KISS, fitting just as nicely in an old beat-up jukebox as on a sleek, shiny new iPod. Fellow Canadian turned SIN CITY SINNER and SLASH bassist TODD KERNS contributes guest vocals on ‘Rock & Roll’ and ‘Mars’. The tunes are catchy and guitar driven, with a simplistic but effective approach to lyrics. ‘My Girl’ and ‘Tonight’ are both solid efforts, while ‘Someday’ is a perfect example of the acoustic power ballad that dominated hair metal albums in the ‘80s. Unfortunately ‘Roach! (Vermin)’ comes across as a novelty track, thereby seeming out of place and unwarranted. The Underground Rebels would serve as a great opening act – which they’ve done for MÖTLEY CRÜE, DOKKEN, W.A.S.P., BANG TANGO and SEBASTIAN BACH – but aren’t quite at headliner status just yet.
