HARDWARES

THE OPAQUE

Bow In Requiem

(Independent)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt

This Los Angeles-based melodic death crew has the cover art and logo thing down pat, solidifying that there is indeed not just melodic death metal these days, but also melodic death metal, which is... the same. But different. Like, the difference between AT THE GATES and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. THE OPAQUE are more in line with the latter, breakdowns flying around like no one's business, vocals occupying that middle ground between growl and screech, guitar work stealing the show all the way. This band has more bite to them than a lot of their peers, which is a good thing as most of those bands are quiet toothless, and I dig the crashing production sound, the blast beats, and the unhinged feel that this has that bands like Black Dahlia definitely do not. I don't dig the screamed vocals (they just have no lasting impression, flying in one earhole and out the other) or the relentless reliance on breakdowns, throwing them in like formula, which gets old pretty fast. If these guys go the realm of huge production and safer songwriting, they'll probably get more popular but will sound like a lot of other bands; if they embrace their wild side and do things a bit differently, they could play some pretty vital melodic death metal. Let's see what happens next.
