HARDWARES

CAYM

From Red To Black

(Independent)

Right off the bat, I'm impressed at the energy and aggression on this nice brief album (at 27 minutes, they might call it an EP, I suppose); considering the main selling point of this band is that drummer Tyler Reiner is the son of ANVIL drummer Robb Reiner I wasn't expecting anything too intense or heavy. But Reiner isn't following his dad's musical career too closely, here the sounds more in line with groove thrash bands like, yup, PANTERA (see 'Fire Water'), maybe some melodic death riffing (see the absurdly titled 'Rocky Mountain Bear Fucker' and 'Life Sentence', which has enough variety and melody in it to help lighten its load a bit and make it the album highlight) in there for good measure. The title track closes off the album as a cool race-to-the-finish nailbiter instrumental thrasher, which is a nice touch. A nice thick production rounds off this indie effort, which is sure to please those who like their metal filled with grooves and simple to digest. It'll go over wonderfully in bars across Canada, even if the overarching vibe threatens to get monotonous for a full-length (or longer long EP, or whatever).
