MASTER

The Witchunt

It's alarming just how little credit MASTER get in death metal, considering they're on album 12, have a totally unique sound, and are considered pretty influential by many. Yet, where's the glory for long-suffering Paul Speckmann? It's nowhere, but it should be here and now, as the man's punked-out death growl is on top of its game here, the vile he spits out perfect over the simple caveman punk/death, the sound shockingly close to heavied up, Lemmy-worshipping d-beat crust instead of '91 USDM, which this band's name will always be attached to. But here, as always, things are simple, speedy, and never oppressive (confusingly, the very traits that also work against the band sometimes), instead giving off a thrash-esque urgency, even if the riffs talk Florida and the vocals vomit Peel Session crust/grind disgust, the whole thing congealing together into a Master mass, one that congeals together from album to album, the whole thing being a 31-year stream of albums that diehards may be able to tell apart but I no longer can: just one long stream of consciousness riffchug masterminded by a guy whose heart is obviously in all the right places.
