EMBLAZONED

The Living Magisterium

A useless intro and four tunes proper is what's in store here on this debut EP from Wisconsin death dudes EMBLAZONED, who feature in their ranks ex-JUNGLE ROT and current DECREPIT BIRTH members. And what they dish out isn't too wildly surprising, a fairly no-bones grinding death affair with some blackened overtones when things get fast and tremolo-y and screechy. There's moments of crawling death metal class (the guitar solo in 'Bound By Eternal Penance'), and 'Refuge In Darkness' is more death-tinged black than blackened death, evening out the tables for what is pretty solid on all fronts, yet not spectacular on any (cue Jungle Rot joke here, I suppose). Definitely an enjoyable EP to listen to, it simultaneously does and doesn't get me excited for a full-length: there's no denying they have the skills, but these songs struggle to be remembered as soon as they are over, making for a disc that sounds great while it's on, but probably won't see a lot of repeat listens. Works for four songs; will it work for 10? Not sure, but I'm just curious enough to tune in again next time to find out, which means this EP actually did do what it was supposed to after all.
