HAREM SCAREM

Mood Swings II

(Frontiers Records)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 8.0

Canadian melodic rockers HAREM SCAREM released the original Mood Swings in 1993 — its second full length album. Twenty years later, the band celebrates the anniversary of its release by re-recording the 11 classic songs plus three new bonus tracks in the form of Mood Swings II. The re-recorded songs are spot on, and if you compare I and II side by side, there’s not much of a difference. But that actually speaks volumes because the band didn’t want to mess with the original record’s formula and Harry Hess’s vocals are still top-notch after all these years. 'No Justice' and 'Had Enough' are as vibrant as ever, while returning drummer Darren Smith nails it on lead vocals on 'Sentimental Blvd'. If you already own the original album, this a great excuse to pick up Mood Swings II just for the three new bonus songs alone, as they fit in brilliantly with the landscape of the band’s original trademark sound.
