HARDWARES

CLERIC

Gratum Inferno

(Tofu Carnage Records)

Gets hard to tell this stuff apart sometimes, even us lunatics who listen to death metal all day long getting confused once the sun sets, forgetting which album has ended and which has begun. Dallas' CLERIC don't offer up much in the way of personality on their debut LP, but they do play death metal with a nice, ragged production sound that hints at some crust punk backgrounds (the record label name is also making me think squat-punk scumbuckets here). Looks like there's KILL THE CLIENT alumni in this band, which is nothin' but a great thing, but none of that group's manic grindcore comes through here, Cleric instead playing death metal straight, the drumming offering up more hints of a grindier, crustier upbringing, but the overall package certainly tuned in to early '90s death in a big way. I dig when they get low and sludgey, like on 'Left Hand Wrath', the title of which nods to the kings but the sound of which threatens to get grindy and, again, crusty, a sound that I'd like to see these guys explore a bit next time out.
