TOXIC HOLOCAUST

Chemistry Of Consciousness

(Relapse)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.5

TOXIC HOLOCAUST mainman Joel Grind has always had an unabashed love for the type of gutter thrash that plays loudly at dive bars after midnight on, like, random Wednesday nights in scuzz areas of town, and that raw thrash has been equally informed by the sort of punk ethos that has continuously underpinned MOTORHEAD. After building a road-dog career that had it on bills with the like-minded MUNICIPAL WASTE or the far more EXODUS-inspired BONDED BY BLOOD, Toxic Holocaust has taken a slight left hand path detour towards its most punk of identities, as Chemistry Of Consciousness is spiteful in ways that only studded jean jackets and safety pins through the nose know how to be. Fear not, thrash is still at the base of Chemistry Of Consciousness, and this LP would, without doubt, be a metal militia favorite of METALLICA fans looking for some chaser after the co-headline with RAVEN: in that vein, Chemistry Of Consciousness is Toxic Holocaust's most listenable record (but not its best), these songs flowing as freely as the Jäger at any SLAYER show. And, man, take in this album's guitar tones with as much attention as you possibly can; along with Stockholm Death, this is the most life-affirming guitar sound you will hear.
