DARK DESIGN

Prey For The Future

When your label compares you to TOXIK, you know... damn, I don't know, when record labels are namedropping Toxik in 2013, I think it's safe to say that we've crossed over into the Twilight Zone. And that's a state of forgotten-thrash-induced bliss-as-ignorance I'll hapilly subscribe to, and so will the fellas in DARK DESIGN. Opening track 'Dark Design' (ooh, I love that) races out of the gates in a hysterical fashion, band members all in a hurry to finish the recording session so they can get back to their WRATHCHILD AMERICA and ANACRUSIS albums, the crashing, in-the-red production suggesting that the producer was too distracted daydreaming about early-to-mid-era PRONG to get things too finicky, the end result sounding suitably old-school in the most natural of ways. Sometimes they take things down a notch for some acoustic guitars and mid-tempo moodiness, but damned if it doesn't work because the blue-collar singer ain't trying to win anyone over, his growl remaining true to old-school thrash, his vocal lines when things get going Belladonna-ish in nature, again, just hysterical; while they're often the weakest point, there's a fun, classic thrash quality to them that gives them a pass. Very hard to believe this isn't a long-lost reissue from 1989, but there you have it. Definitely fun if you happen to own more than one Toxik LP in the ol' collection.
