DENNER’S TRICKBAG

Denner’s Trickbag

MERCYFUL FATE/ex-KING DIAMOND/FORCE OF EVIL guitarist Michael Denner has assembled a bunch of unknown Danish musicians to stretch his musical Jones, opting for a mid-to-up tempo 70s rock vibe, rather than the style he’s spent most of his life performing. Think plenty of wah wah pedal and feedback. That’s not to say there’s no guitar jams, far from it, something proved right away on the surf-rock opener, ‘Ethiopia’. Something tells me, if they ever get onstage, Denner is just going to go sick on the solos! ‘Foyers Of Fun’ has a bluesy vibe, while ‘Never In My Life’ adds cowbell and keyboards to the aforementioned blues: simple structures with plenty of room for the fretwork to wander. ‘Don’t You Let Me Down’ is an honest bit of hard rock, one of the few that gets (somewhat) close to preconceived notions. ‘Polecat Woman’ sounds like a title the SCORPIONS would have come up with, in the early 70s. Not sure why the MONTROSE cover, ‘I Got The Fire’ is included, apart from historical perspective (and a chance for the bass player to strut some stuff). ‘Armageddon’ takes a more progressive tint, something akin to early RUSH. The over 40 set will certainly get more out of this than anyone else.
