FRAGARAK

Crypts Of Dissimulation

(Independent)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 7.5

Well-produced technical death metal from India is the catch of the day here, and what a catch it is, FRAGARAK (that name's not gonna help matters any, but what can you do? We lived with RAGNAROK, kinda, we can live with this.) doing all kinds of swirling fast and mid-paced technical death metal invocations, all melodic like DEATH at various points in their various primes, sometimes getting near anthemic like melodic death metal when it was vital and not totally rote, the whole thing clashing and banging with a raw approach that North American melodic death bands would shun. 'Insurgence' shows off some guitar-god soloing skills that, again, make me think about Death, while the twists and turns of 'Effacing The Esotery' (clearly, they've got the naming-death-metal-songs thing down pat) make me start thinking ATHEIST or CYNIC without the wood chimes. 'Cryptic Convulsion' has a neat late-song breakdown that incorporates interesting melodies that sound totally alien to DM yet work perfectly. The "I'll never remember this song as long as I live" factor is high throughout this disc, but that goes with the territory. I wouldn't mind seeing some shorter, more concise songs with a bit more of a focus on memorable songwriting, but this is technical death metal done with more grace and emotion than most.
