GYRE

Second Circle

(Monolithic Records Records)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 7.0

New Jersey progressive metal outfit GYRE’s sophomore EP, Second Circle, is based on the chakras (the energy that flows through your body), most notably the second chakra, inspired by author T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland. The four tracks of prog-ish, groove metal has a likeness to GOJIRA and MESHUGGAH. The combination of djent-like rhythms and onomatopoetic musical phrasings are played in a furious, whirlwind manner. On ‘Circle To Feed,’ vocalist Giovannie Jeckler’s raspy screams are interlaced with eerie vocal harmonies and a cleaner melodic voice, giving it an added quality. This effect also comes into play on CD closer, ‘I Receiving All.’ The progressive, deathy yet funky rhythms of ‘Ever Devourer’ are pummeling and technical yet melodic in the right spots. There’s enough aggression and variation in each song to keep things interesting. Although Gyre aren’t quite there yet, they do show a lot of promise within the genre and we’ll just have to wait and see what they can come up with on a proper full-length release.
