DEVILDRIVER

Winter Kills

California groove machine, DEVILDRIVER, is in full force on its sixth release, Winter Kills. The former COAL CHAMBER vocalist Dez Fafara doesn’t hold anything back and doesn’t take any shit from anyone on this album. There’s a more focused direction to the band’s brutality and aggression on the 11 tracks that grace Winter Kills. Fafara’s band is one of the most underrated in all of extreme metal and the proof is in the riffs. Guitarists Mike Spreitzer and Jeff Kendrick craft some heavy neck-breaking, down-tuned chuggers while drummer John Boecklin flails mercifully throughout the album proving he can go toe-to toe with any metal drummer out there. Producer Mark Lewis caught most of Fafara’s vocals on first takes and he didn’t over-stack or over-dub them too much, either. The recording actually has a very live feel. The subject matter of some of the songs tackle issues such as the spiritual, the metaphysical (‘Oath Of The Abyss’) and everyday life problems (‘Desperate Times’), which is partly about his sister’s bout with cancer. He also calls a few people out on the vengeance-filled ‘Gutted.’ DevilDriver is out for blood on Winter Kills and if you’ve written them off in the past or haven’t yet given them a chance for whatever reason, you need to give this disc a thorough spin.
