SCYTHE

Subterranean Steel

(R.I.P. Records)

This Chicago-based metal-on-metal band features vocalist/guitarist Rick Scythe, best known in metal circles as fronting Chicago-based metal-on-metal underdog heroes USURPER. Here, on SCYTHE's second album, that legacy is kept alive with much pride and much skill. When Rick belts out "Welcome to the graveyard, motherfucker!" before a cowbell-laden blackened thrash refrain in 'October Dies', you know it's going to be good times. But that's about as fun as it gets, as the rest of the great disc focuses on plodding, heavy riffing, with a huge, thick production that manages to loosen up the overly tight reigns that often held back Usurper's work. The band work at two speeds: mid and speedy, and songs like 'The Grunting Dead' feature both fast, thrashy parts and killer near-melodic mid-paced trad metal heaven, delivered through a modern, heavy filter. Here, on this incredibly solid album, the band makes no mistakes and delivers the metal goods just right, a few death grunts and "hey!"s thrown in for good measure, everything one glorious, heavy love letter to a proto-blackthrash sound firmly rooted in heavy doom riffing and straight-up old-school metal of the Tom Warrior-worshipping variety. And that cover art? Huge horns up all around there.
