FYRNASK

Eldir Nott

(Temple Of Tortuous)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.0

Much like Switzerland’s PAYSAGE D’HIVER, Germany’s FYRNASK brings to existence black metal that creates claustrophobia, confusion and capitulation, Eldir Nott the type of shape-shifting record we might even expect of DEATHSPELL OMEGA on a particularly darkened, and darkening, day. Revelling in the dissonance and sense of the distraught that MAYHEM’s Ordo Ad Chao was adept at and revered for, Eldir Nott suffocates with its ferocity and a lost-in-December’s-blizzard haze that those living in northern climates will no doubt understand and appreciate, despite these cold winter songs making their first appearance in the here and now of the dead summer heat. Though Eldir Nott uses its elongated song structures to its advantage to create layered and nuanced reflections of despondence and desolation, this album could benefit from some of the brevity and soul-destroying rawness found on Transylvanian Hunger or Under A Funeral Moon, though adherence to second wave paradigms doesn’t seem to be amongst Fyrnask’s priorities. Eldir Nott is a wolf’s lair, an abyss, a chimera and absolutely soul-shattering, not necessarily in that order.
