YOUR LAST WISH

Desolation

(Maple Metal Records)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 7.0

Montréal-based, female-fronted melodic death metal band, YOUR LAST WISH, has just released its sophomore full-length album, Desolation. It’s an infectious and brutal slab of technical and melodic death metal done with a touch of progressive pizazz, most notably due to the swirling, technical guitar leads. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Badass Studio in Montréal by Jef Fortin (BLACKGUARD, NORDHEIM, UNEXPECT) and produced by the band themselves. The band has gone through a number of line-up changes over the years since its 2003 inception, but guitarist JF Gagné has remained the only constant. Joining Gagné is Peruvian vocalist Roxana Bouchard, guitarist Dave Gagné (no relation), bassist Louis Goulet and drummer Gabriel Fortin. Three of the 11 death odes on Desolation were featured on the band’s 2011 Collision Course EP. At the band’s heaviest, they sound like a cross between ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS and MORBID ANGEL. Bouchard’s scratchy, blackened barks are comparable to Angela Gossow, although not as easily decipherable or concise. However, Bouchard also utilizes a lower-register bellow, most notably on ‘Collision Course,’ which gives the song an added dynamic. The title track and CD closer displays an onomatopoetic-like element reminiscent of the so-called djent movement by utilizing MESHUGGAH-like rhythms. On Desolation, Your Last Wish knows how to lay down some brutal-yet-melodic death metal and they show some great promise within the genre.
