HARDWARES

AXXION

Wild Racer

(High Roller)

Reviewed by : Mark Gromen
Rating : 7.5

Pronounced “action,” this is the full-length debut from Canadian traditional metallers, sporting a pair of ex-SKULL FIST members. Built around catchy melodies and plenty of guitarwork, AXXION stand above many likeminded acts on their label, which specializes in this brand of high pitched odes to early 80s heavy metal. The vocals vary between wail and caterwaul, thankfully just another instrument in the fast paced, headbanging delivery. ‘Wild Racer’ leads things off, a fist pumping calling card that portents what’s to follow, with ‘High Bars’ having a punky Sunset Strip quality about it. The lone such number. Other surprises include ‘Stallion’, which rides a heretofore unseen MAIDEN influenced, bass-heavy gallop, while the subtle ‘Still Hungry’ reins in both intensity and over-the-top voice. A cover of countrymen THOR’s ‘Ride Of The Chariots’ closes the album. Band played a string of dates in Germany to hone their craft.
