THE PETE FLESH DEATHTRIP

Mortui Vivos Docent

Hmm, weird kinda-joke name, horrible cover art, album title that looks like that... what's not to like? The fact that it's a one-man band? Luckily, opener 'Fallen Bliss' gets rid of some of these worries pretty fast, the raw blackened death actually hitting the spot in the way it's not afraid to be barbaric and a bit regal all at once. The drum sound threatens to be a bit too thin, but thinness is inherent in black metal; you tune it out and get on with life. And just who is Pete Flesh? Peter "Pete Flesh" Karlsson, of course, a Swede who has played in MAZE OF TORMENT (whose 2000 Necropolis Records release Death Strikes was pretty cool, and I can't believe I remember that), DECEIVER, and FLESH. Anyway, here, tracks like death-heavy 'Crave The Fire' or slower BM crawl 'The Suicide End' show so much chemistry and skill on drums, guitar, and bass that it's quite shocking that one dude is behind them all (then again, if one-man bands don't have perfect chemistry, there might be larger issues at hand, no?). And I love the unexpected SLAYER guitar homage in 'Raven's Reborn'. Sure, the album suffers from that raw, underproduced, forgettable, and somewhat cold, unlovable feel, but in some strange ways those are all also positive attributes in the strange world of Mr. Flesh.
