SOMBRES FORÊTS

La Mort Du Soleil

(Sepulchral)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.0

Hailing from the same underground black metal scene that has given rise to the likes of FROZEN SHADOWS, GRIS, UTLAGR and FORTERESSE, Quebec’s SOMBRES FORETS has written a record that actually reflects the despair of its title, as La Mort Du Soleil (The Death Of The Sun, in English) is a tormented and hellish exploration of where black metal can take its adherents when misery is its catalyst instead of hatred of the church. La Mort Du Soleil alternates between the quiet moments that deceptively draw parallels to post-metal before the absolute anguish of these proceedings make their full impact known, the record always cocooned in its dark, dark raison d’etre. This surely isn’t for the uninitiated or the brigade that considers CRADLE, DIMMU or SATYRICON any type of genuine delineation of black metal... instead, let’s all experience the pain and let it organically flood through (because trying to minimize or repress it will only prolong its effectiveness) and, in its most potent moments, whisper the following supremacy: vive le métal noir québécois.
