PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS

Walk Through Exits Only

(Housecore / MRI / Megaforce)

At age 45, PHILIP H. ANSELMO – vocalist for PANTERA, DOWN, and SUPERJOINT RITUAL – has released his first solo album, an abrasive eight song effort boldly titled Walk Through Exits Only. Opening track ‘Music Media Is My Whore’ is intriguingly named yet proves to be a two-minute musical quandary led by the beat of a marching drum. From there it’s head first into harsh, ugly heavy metal. The brutality blasting from your speakers is intentionally difficult to categorize. Throughout this 40-minute aural assault, elements of grindcore, death metal, speed metal, and all sorts of extremity are brought together in what initially appears to be an angry, unfashionable mess. Nothing is as clear and concise, or immediately catchy, as ‘Cowboys From Hell’ or ‘Stone The Crow’. In fact, ‘Battalion Of Zero’ and ‘Betrayed’ come across as commercially unviable, but repeated listens give way to subtle intricacies and detailed calculations; all full of angst. Overtop of this “noise,” Anselmo’s lyrics are personal and revealing. In the title track Anselmo screams, “It’s ruined. Everybody ruins music, not just me.” Layers of bravado are peeled away in first single/video ‘Bedridden’ with the admission that, “I am a meticulous man… I am a ridiculous man… and there is no master plan.” Beyond bruising, Anselmo along with guitarist Marzi Montazeri, bassist Bennett Bartley, and drummer Jose Manual Gonzalez, deliver a near fatal beating.
