AGATHODAIMON

In Darkness

(Massacre)

Reviewed by : David Perri
Rating : 7.0

After 2009’s Phoenix, where Germany’s AGATHODAIMON tried valiantly to combine symphonic black with PAIN-esque electronic moments (it’s actually a better record than that description makes it sound), the band has returned to its goth-based roots, channeling once again a darker, less hyperbolic CRADLE OF FILTH. As a result, In Darkness is an album that is ripe for autumn or winter consumption and fits awkwardly in the here and now of summer 2013, but the band can’t be faulted for an inappropriate release date; then again, life’s blackness unfortunately knows no seasonal bounds, as we’re all old enough (or wise enough?) to realise. In Darkness is as dead-serious as Phoenix wasn’t, this latest album a grave hymn to the nocturnal , Agathodaimon writing tracks that seem organic, as opposed to over-thought and commercial, as had become the norm in recent years. And the effort pays off, as ‘Oceans of Black’, the fantastically titled ‘Dusk of An Infinite Shade’ and the title track all offer this group’s best moments since the debut, save for maybe the made-for- a-Hollywood-blockbuster chorus in ‘Ghost of a Soul’ or the classic IN FLAMES riffing of ‘Heliopolis’, both from the aforementioned Phoenix.
