HARDWARES

HAVOK

Unnatural Selection

Good amount of buzz around this thrash/crossover band, with lots of high-profile tours happening and album covers that just take you right back to the '80s in all the right ways. And dig that production, bouncy, buoyant, bassy, like the best of NUCLEAR ASSAULT, a band whose stamp is all over this thing in so many ways. But tracks like 'Under The Gun' recall OVERKILL with that fun shuffle, bass leading the way, everything happy thrashy good times, the throwback/day-glo graphics showing a kinship with MUNICIPAL WASTE in a pretty big way, even if this band is more FORBIDDEN than D.R.I. But with so many long-ish songs and not a melody in sight, it starts to wear on even the most seasoned thrasher; by the time the last third of the album rolls around, tunes like the mid-tempo 'Worse Than War' are a chore to listen to. But that's a struggle inherent to the sound, and while HAVOK are still searching for a real solid identity of their own, they're having a ton of fun along the way, crafting albums that may be a bit forgettable but are generally enjoyable, fully thrashing, and without a doubt in love with this always-enjoyable subgenre(s).
