ETERNAL REST

Prophetic

(Deepsend)

I've got my eyes on Deepsend Records for death these days, and this 30-minute blaster from Australia's ETERNAL REST confirms that the label indeed knows what's up. For their debut full-length (following up a 2009 EP, Seize Of Anubis), solid is the word, as the band lays down NILE-influenced death metal, in a skilled and concise fashion. Check out opener 'Preaching The Decimation Of Spher' for an interesting mid-song breakdown that doesn't make you roll your eyes like deathcore bands do; rather, it's interesting, skilled, and just tech enough to make you sit up in your seat a bit. But, the band never gets overly tech, instead focusing on songs that are more or less to the point, the soaring guitar leads often bringing to mind the aforementioned Egyptologists or MORBID ANGEL, and these aren't throwaway comparisons: these guys earn and deserve it, the tunes here being skilled, well-played, and mature enough to not be mindless tech-fests (with a decent production, to boot). Songs like 'Remnants' toy with enough starts and stops to keep things interesting, but never losing the simple brutality that keeps music like this vital. I mean, you might even remember some of these songs after the album is done. Plus, they do one of my favourite things ever: blast beat over slow riffing ('Infernal Reign', 'Prophetic'), which always totally makes my day.
