HARDWARES

BLIGHT

Death Reborn

Great little two-song EP here from Quebec's BLIGHT, featuring ex-ION DISSONANCE and UNQUINTESSENCE (a mighty, mighty good and underrated band) screamer Gabriel McCaughry on vocals, who provides a crazed, near-hardcore bark that creates a down-to-earth tone to the black metal proceedings. 'Death Reborn' starts out mid-tempo but frantic like KATAKYLSM's Temple Of Knowledge (ahh, dulcet tones to the lugnut, them words) disc, then gets faster and faster and faster, vocals high in the mix, everything high in the mix, the in-the-red madness adding to the overall anxiety, creating a black metal informed by modern-day urban woes as much as magical mystical ones, which is really the secret to why this band works so well. Then, 'Gnostic Dirge' flirts with the slow and low, the snail's pace allowing for everything to compete for attention, the sludge riffs clashing against the interestingly flamboyant bass work, screaming vocals over top of it all, solid drums behind it all, everything working together perfectly. Looking forward to seeing what kind of labyrinthine anger a full-length will bring.
