HARDWARES

IMPIETY

Vengeance Hell Immemorial

(Hells Headbangers)

Anyone familiar with the more bestial side of underground extreme metal is aware of Singapore's IMPIETY, who have grown over the years to be one of the best bands at combining completely unhinged blackthrash with enough talent to make it listenable, powerful, and totally, in all senses of the word, brutal. Any of their albums are well worth checking out; this new disc, which collects 15 tunes from splits, EPs, and demos, is a bit more of a mixed bag. The older material, well, that's about as raw as it gets, completely maniacal HELLHAMMER worship, right down to the production qualities. Admirable and enjoyable but in a horrid-demo kinda way. The newest material on here dates to 2008 and you can certainly hear the band getting better over time, refining while never losing their extremity one bit; the later-era tracks here totally slay, while the earlier material is fun and ugly but lacks the precision and intensity that comes with the more, uh, mature material. Great band, but this one's for diehards only. Spend your money on one of their full-lengths instead, they're well worth it, as they show how a band like this can get polished but not lose one ounce of their edge.
