KALMAH

Seventh Swamphony

(Spinefarm)

Nordic metal’s various segmentations and sub-strata are the stuff of legend in our circles (one needs only to mention Stockholm death, Gothenburg melodic death, Norwegian second-wave black and Finnish symphonic thrash to set off the divisions and delineations) and, happily (?) for those who take in and experience all of them, each counterpart evokes its own set of reaction and lore. KALMAH’s Seventh Swamphony (yes, shockingly the band’s seventh record) is the exact representation of the Finnish symphonic thrash experience, which is no surprise given this band’s history. Kalmah was, at one time, in the same space as fellow Finns in NORTHER , continuously and vigorously competing for CHILDREN OF BODOM cover band of the year award, but Kalmah has come into its own as the years have moved on, and the Oulu group is now a bonafide and legitimate entry in the Finnish scene in its own right (incidentally, the metal trivia goof in me has the unmanageable urge to tell you that Oulu is also IMPALED NAZARENE and SENTENCED’s home town). But back to that Finnish symphonic thrash experience point... it might be that only the northern Euros and the Canadians will ultimately understand the conditions in which this type of music is conceived, contextualized and experienced, as Seventh Swamphony is every uncharitably dark 4 PM dusk in the absolute dead of winter, the record playing at the loudest of volumes on the iPhone as you’re forced to carry out whatever daily necessity you’re in the midst of, even if temperatures and temperaments should have you hibernating until May brings its respite. But life goes on, as does its blessing, and you receive accompaniment from a record like Seventh Swamphony, a perfectly executed Finnish symphonic thrash record done impeccably right that maybe only the northern Euros and Canadians will, ultimately, understand entirely.
