KINGS DESTROY

A Time Of Hunting

(War Crime)

Fascinating prospect, this: a bunch of seasoned NYHC vets (including dudes from KILLING TIME) laying down no-bones, no-irony, tried-and-true trad-and-doom. And they nail it on this, their second album. First thing that jumps out at the listener is the killer production, namely on the drums, huge, booming, crashing, wow. What a great sound. First tune 'Storm Break' is near stoner, a speedier, catchy riff doing the trick, while its follow-up, 'The Toe', goes low and slow, majestic and doom-y in a regal old trad metal fashion, like CANDLEMASS. While the sung vocals are a bit hard to swallow sometimes, other times, like on 'Shattered Pattern', the passion comes shining through, and it's powerful, and it works. Meanwhile, 'Time Of Hunting', man, pure old-school doom/trad glory, evocative and powerful in the ways the best of underground '80s trad was. The BLACK SABBATH homage of closer 'Turul' is as crushing as a good doom closer should be. I just love that this is doom but has enough upbeat traditional metal joy within the sorrow to keep it energetic, fun, and lively. Shockingly great album from these never-heard-of-'ems.
