VHOL

Vhol

(Profound Lore)

VHOL is the San Francisco-based side-project of members of AGALLOCH, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE and YOB and, given the stature of the elements involved, the fact that this debut LP is one of rarified vintage is completely and utterly unsurprising. People discuss GHOST’s grounding in proto-black metal and while that assessment has merit given the band’s unholy burnings of MERCYFUL FATE and BLUE OYSTER CULT, it’s a group like Vhol that has truly manifested the proto-black sound, one based definitely and defiantly in that now classic Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old School Black Metal comp, which features the true purveyors of black metal in SARCOFAGO, TORMENTOR and, of course, the genre-defining BATHORY, indelible experiences that Vhol is no doubt firmly entrenched within. That said, the Mercyful Fate influences burn, in pentagrams, during Vhol’s album as the occasional KING DIAMOND-esque falsetto moments are abound, though they’re used more in tribute and not to ironic excess. Uniquely, Vhol is unafraid to set crust punk as foundation, creating real menace at the surface of this record, a shadow of the horns that is omnipresent, caustic and attitude-obsessed , bringing this proceeding to the most blazingly authentic levels of proto-black not released before 1986. Fenriz is going to respect this. But, more importantly, Fenriz is going to love this.
