FAIR WARNING

Sundancer

(Steamhammer/SPV)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 7.5

German rockers FAIR WARNING create an infectious blend of ’80s style rock with AOR influences on its seventh full-length offering, Sundancer. Led by charismatic vocalist Tommy Heart and the dazzling guitar wizardry of Helge Engelke, Fair Warning has had a rewarding 20-plus year career. They might not be as well known in North America as they are abroad, but their melodious musical style fits right in with JOURNEY, TEN, MORITZ and SHY, while displaying some slight ’80s metal influences from bands such as FIREHOUSE, TRIXTER and the like. Engelke’s classic rock playing style gives the band a harder edge, and he pulls off some soulful guitar leads, too. The 14 hook-laden songs are accented with prominent keyboard melodies and huge vocal harmonies. Produced by the band themselves, the album has a warm and vibrant sound. However, I think 14 songs on an album these days is way too many and I wish the band would have kept the tracklist to nine or ten like in the cherished vinyl days. But if you’re a fan of melodic rock and AOR and haven’t yet discovered Fair Warning, then Sundancer is a good introduction to the band.
