IMMOLATION

Kingdom Of Conspiracy

(Nuclear Blast)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 9.0

New York's IMMOLATION are one of the best death metal bands out there today, period. They always seem to operate in the shadows of the big boys, but hopefully albums as powerful as Kingdom Of Conspiracy (which follows up 2010's also-excellent Majesty And Decay) will help them, finally, sit on top of the blasting throne, where they belong. The title track, which opens the disc, perfectly shows what this band is about, combining atmosphere and a climactic build with off-kilter guitar work, setting the tone for another disturbing and powerful Immolation journey/album. But they're not always weird and off-kilter: 'Indoctrinate' follows a more straight-up blasting death metal path, and late in the song uses the band's penchant for haunting melodies to great effect, the end result being a building of drama that most death metal bands can't even dream of, never mind execute. Much of what makes this band so great is the guitar work: check out the guitar solo on 'A Spectacle Of Lies', which is quickly followed up with some excellent INCANTATION-ish guitar squealies. 'All That Awaits Us' ends this on a typically grand and foreboding fashion, the song being a great way to close what is an incredibly powerful disc, extremely recommended for anyone who likes it loud.
