ARTIZAN

Ancestral Energy

(Pure Steel Records)

Jacksonville, Florida’s ARTIZAN hits a sweet spot. The quintet superbly blends melodic, traditional, progressive and power metal elements on its sophomore release, Ancestral Energy, recalling early MAIDEN, JAG PANZER and ICED EARTH. Produced by legendary metal knob-twirler Jim Morris of Morrisound Studios, its sound, feel and atmosphere screams old school metal. The seven-song tracklisting is the perfect album length, totaling at 40-plus minutes. The drumming skills of Ty Tammeus is phenomenal, while vocalist Tom Braden steals the show. His soaring, melodic vocals are magnificent, he’s one of the best (perhaps overlooked?) singers in the biz. The melody lines reel you in, the choruses beg you to sing along and the harmonized guitar melodies (check out “The Guardian”) are hooky and damn catchy. Ex-Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow makes a killer guest appearance on the ten-plus minute epic title track. Barlow’s voice is instantly recognizable and it blends well as a duet with Braden. Artizan has built upon its strong debut release, but Ancestral Energy surpasses it by a mile. Look out for these guys.
