HATRIOT

Heroes Of Origin

(Self-released)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 8.0

Former EXODUS vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza has resurfaced with his new band, HATRIOT, which includes his two sons Cody (bass) and Nick (drums), making it a thrash-tastic family affair. Zetro’s sons actually had to pass an audition to be in the band, so there’s no nepotism here. They had to earn their spot, and while listening to the CD, it’s obvious they did. If you like Exodus, most notably 2004’s reunited lineup release with Sousa, Tempo of the Damned, then you’ll love Hatriot’s debut studio album, Heroes of Origin. This is crushing, old-school Bay Area thrash at its finest. The 10 relentless thrash anthems are loaded with blistering guitar solos, insanely-fast rhythms, anthemic gang chants and of course Souza’s trademark nasally barks. His voice is so distinctive and recognizable while firing off his lyrics at a maniacal pace, and he really shines on every track. Nick Souza really holds his own on the drums with his furious double bass skills and quickly-executed fills throughout the disc. The trade-off guitar leads between Miguel Esparza and Kosta Varvatakis are pretty stellar, too. Heroes of Origin is a non-stop thrash frenzy and Zetro has proved that he’s still got it. If anything, playing with new blood has lit a fire under his belly.
