HARDWARES

COUGH/WINDHAND

Reflection Of The Negative

(Relapse)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.5

Great split here from two Richmond, Virginia based doom/sludge bands. COUGH kick things off with an 18-minute opener (ahem), 'Athame', which is slow-as-sludge-gets craggly doom that will please any sludge fan who enjoyed the band's 2010 Relapse debut, Ritual Abuse. Downtuned, down-trodden, raw, and ugly, this is a great look into the glorious underbelly of American extremity. Excellent tune from an excellent band, definitely only for those who like it extreme. WINDHAND's two tunes are a bit shorter at 7 and 11 minutes, and have more of a stoner doom approach, with ghostly sung vocals over top of heavily fuzzed-out and (compared to Cough), upbeat, rockin' riffing. This is a great split, showing two sides of doom, both worth exploring for newcomers and with plenty of rewards to be found for those already versed in this most extreme of subgenres.
