ANCIIENTS

Heart Of Oak

(Season Of Mist)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 7.5

Vancouver's ANCIIENTS conjure up a plethora of metal sub-genres on its debut full-length album, Heart of Oak. It’s a wonderful blend of stoner, space and progressive rock with a sludgy-yet-modern tone similar to bands such as MASTODON, BARONESS and THE SWORD. Scandinavian and Nordic influences are present as well. All nine tracks (minus instrumental “One Foot in the Light”) are epically-long — exceeding the six-minute mark. The well-constructed songs are extremely captivating, reeling you in with its catchy melodies and mystical harmonies. They also know when to pour on the heavy stuff and every song introduces many twists and turns in variation, tempo, dynamic, and mood. The vocals also seamlessly wander in and out of melodic clean vocals to harsh screams. Some of the songs could use a vasectomy, as they tend to wander off into no man’s land and drag on aimlessly at times. These canucks aren’t quite there yet, but they show great potential and are certainly headed in the right direction. Even though they share commonalities to the aforementioned bands, Anciients is capable of being its own entity.
