HARDWARES

NECROCURSE

Grip Of The Dead

(Pulverised Records)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 7.0

The debut full-length from these Swede deathsters (which feature among their ranks dudes from NIFELHEIM, RUNEMAGICK, SACRAMENTUM, and SWORDMASTER) is a fun blast of all things brazen and bestial, the relatively slick production not hiding the warts inherent in music that worships at the altar of CELTIC FROST, DARKTHRONE, and Lemmy. I love the fact that the first song proper is called 'Necrocurse', and also love that there's a song called 'Death Metal Rebels', everything adding up to a fun romp through the forests of grim, the blackened slog of death, the crusted manic punk edge of bestial black. Those coarse, screamed vocals threaten to wear on the frazzled nerves after a while, but you can always tune 'em out and wait for the next divebombed SLAYER-worshipping guitar solo or double-time frantic polka waltz, the Teutonic thrash influence also peeking out to say hello every once in a while in this disc that, again, is, deceptively and enjoyably, all about fun.
